I am still mind boggled. Strangely, because I love Butala’s non-fiction paeans to the prairie landscape, it was the repetitiveness of her descriptive passages that sometimes bogged the story down for me. I've really gotten to know the characters intimately during the course of this storyline. There are no discussion topics on this book yet. I loved Fiona and Sid. I really enjoyed reading it but was disappointed with the ending. I'm kind of sad that it's the last of this wonderful trilogy. The story moves along well, but the main character does not really move along until the end of the book. I’m always excited for prairie novels, and Butala’s absorbing and descriptive writing drew me in quickly. Butala's descriptions made you feel the cold prairie winter, and the hot summers. David McGregor's family owns an oil firm and the vast Rivercross estate in Alberta. I enjoyed the characters, the descriptions of homestead and Western life in this book. Sigh. Unlike the first two couples, Seamie and Willa are priviledge. Hey does it matter if I were to read this one first and out of order? I really enjoyed this book, Sophie is a complex and wonderful character. The only thing I like about this book is that I could read more about the Fiona and Joe. This book was a gift, not the genre I'd typically select for myself, but a fantastic read! This book is a whopper coming in at over 600 pages and set in locales across the world from 1914-1918. The style of writing was a little too saccarin oftentimes for me, and the plot at times was a I enjoyed reading about Katalin and all her many family, friends and acquaintances, but it took me FOREVER to get through the book.
